This Christmas season we've been emphasizing the importance of Christ's Birth. The video, "A Savior is Born" recounts the birth of Jesus Christ. We learn that He was born in order for us to overcome our sins, our sadness, and even death itself. At a recent missionary Christmas Devotional, we all took pictures of us with a piece of paper explaining our personal reasons of why the Savior's birth was so important.

So many new missionaries!

Name:
Sister, Natalie Wang

Where am I from:
Taiwan Tao yuan

My favorite thing:
I love blue! I also like to eat, but I'm kind of a picky eater.

A little about my family:
When my father was 16 he and his sister joined the church. A few years later he served in the Taiwan Tai Zhong mission. He is also an expert at telling story's.
My mothers wasn't baptized until she was 21. She is an amazingly smart, bright, energetic mother, and I hope one day I will be able to be just like her!
My older brother who is five years older the me, served his mission in Toronto Canada. We have a great relationship the two of us.

My testimony:
I want to bare testimony that Heavenly Father really dose know each one of us personally; he knows our hearts desires, our thoughts, and all the things we will things we will have to face (often times very difficult). I truly bare witness that Heavenly Father is always by our side helping us, he is much like the sun, when you close your eyes you can feel his presents all around us. Sometimes we feel like we can't stand the heat and we chose to run to the shade. Just like the Sun, the light of Heavenly Father is always there, and is always giving us blessings.

One of my most favorite scriptures is in alma 37 verse 37, it says:
"Counsel with the Lord in all thy doings, and he will direct thee for good; yea, when thou liest down at night lie down unto the Lord, that he may watch over you in your sleep; and when thou risest in the morning let thy heart be full of thanks unto God; and if ye do these things, ye shall be lifted up at the last day."

When we take prayer and making it a one on one conversation with our Heavenly Father we will know for ourselves that he really does know each one of us, that he will teach us what we should do, and moreover we will be more willing to bask in the sunlight he gives us, by doing so we will receive joy that exceeds anything we could ever imagine.
Heavenly Father really dose know each of us, he knows our name. I know that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ live! Because of the gospel we can obtain limitless happiness! In the name of Jesus Christ Amen.

Because He Lives

Because He Lives

By: Elder Phillips

Imagine, if you will, a moment when everything changed. It could have been a change of career, the loss of a loved one, or moving to a new place. Now think about how you felt, the thoughts running through your head, the worries you had, the unknown future ahead.

Similar thoughts and feelings were experienced by the followers of Jesus Christ at the time of his death, where he died on the cross, for all of us. Why did he leave? What will we do now? Who will save us? The fears, doubts and questions soon diminished by the triumphant message of a heavenly messenger, "He is not here for He has Risen."

Christ lives today! and Because He Lives today we can have blessings that rain down from heaven, infinitely! He is here for us when we feel alone, forgotten, and even when we are convinced that we do not need him. Because He Lives, we are able to live again, soon after this life. Because He Lives, we can too, but only through Him.

I have a firm testimony of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. I know that he lives and loves each and everyone of us. He is here by our side every step of the way. He understands and guides us all. I invite every individual, go! Get to know and learn of Him. Discover how and why He lives. Embrace what He is here to do, for you.

This is my testimony and prayer, that you may feel His love this Easter season. May you discover His presence in your life and make the sacrifices to hold Him near. No matter who you are, or who you were, He loves you. This I know and proclaim to be true, in the name of our Beloved Savior, Jesus Christ, amen.

Temple Worship: A Pattern in Our Lives

 (part 4 of 4)

My Testimony

This past June, Sister Goo and I had a special blessing and experience as I was honored and privileged to perform the sealing for our youngest son and his bride. As we, our other four children and their spouses, and other family and friends entered the sealing room in the Kona Hawaii Temple, we felt a powerful spiritual presence. My eyes grew wet as I realized how much the Lord has blessed our family as we, as parents, have tried to follow the Lord in directing our family to the temple and in making temple worship a pattern in our lives. And we felt a renewed commitment to honor the sacred covenants that we have made in the House of the Lord.

On the east wall of every temple is engraved: “The House of the Lord. Holiness to the Lord.” I testify that all of the temples of the Lord are His sanctuaries here upon this earth. I pray and sincerely hope that the Lord will bless you with a strong desire to attend the temple more often, as your circumstances permit, and claim the blessings and protections that the Lord has promised. May we remember that the words of our Prophets and Apostles are the words of our Savior to us. He has warned and counseled us to go to the temple often. I testify that Jesus Christ lives, that this is His Church, that the Temple is his holy House, and that He is the center of our worship in the Temple. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Temple Worship: A Pattern in Our Lives

(part 3 of 4)

Our Commitment to the House of the Lord

(The House of Glory)

The Lord, in the dedicatory prayer of the Kirtland Temple in 1836 revealed these words to the Prophet Joseph Smith. “...and honorably hold a name and standing in this thy house, to all generations and for eternity”. (D&C 109:24)

In his book, The House of Glory, Michael Wilcox states that “the word “standing” implies frequent attendance. The dictionary’s definitions of standing are “length of time or duration; permanent and unchanging; not movable; stationary; high reputation or esteem. (The American Heritage Dictionary.) All these meanings bear on the Lord’s words in the Doctrine and Covenants and imply the constant, continual use of the recommend. ...If we desire the promised protection of the Father’s name, we must receive our temple recommends, hold them honorably, and use them frequently, not merely to attend the temple but also to worship there.” (p. 56)

Bro. Wilcox also shared that: “Most of all, we must not become discouraged. It was never intended that we understand the temple ordinances all at once. They were designed to feed us for a lifetime...The temple ordinances, like the scriptures, are worth thousands of readings, and even then we shall not have sounded the depths of their possibilities.” (p. 27)

Another author, Andrew C. Skinner in his book, Temple Worship, stated: “The temple endowment is not a casual matter, nor was it intended to be understood fully in one or two visits to the temple. President David O. McKay is reported to have said, after nearly sixty years of temple attendance: ‘Now I am beginning to understand the endowment.’ If it took a prophet of God of the spiritual depth of President McKay almost six decades to begin to understand the temple endowment, I think we may be pardoned if we sometimes don’t understand- but only if we approach our deficiency in a spirit of humility and resolve to do better...we must go often to the temple with a seeking mind and heart.” (p. 58) President Howard W. Hunter a strong advocate for temple attendance, stated the October 1994

Temple Worship: A Pattern in Our Lives

(part 2 of 4)
General Conference:

“Let us be a temple-attending and a temple-loving people. Let us hasten to the temple as frequently as time and means and personal circumstances allow. Let us go not only for our kindred dead, but let us go for the personal blessing of temple worship, for the sanctity and safety which is provided within those hallowed and consecrated walls. The temple is a place of beauty, it is a place of revelation, it is a place of peace. It is the House of the Lord. It is holy unto the Lord. It should be holy unto us.”

In the April 2009 General Conference Elder David A. Bednar stated: “... the process of taking upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ that is commenced in the waters of baptism is continued and enlarged in the house of the Lord. As we stand in the waters of baptism, we look to the temple. As we partake of the sacrament, we look to the temple. We pledge to always remember the Savior and to keep His commandments as preparation to participate in the sacred ordinances of the temple and receive the highest blessings available through the name and by the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. Thus, in the ordinances of the holy temple we more completely and fully take upon us the name of Jesus Christ.”

Elder Bednar’s added as he described the exodus from Nauvoo and President Brigham Young’s letter to the saints: “Now is the time for labor. Let the fire of the covenant which you made in the House of Lord, burn in your hearts, like flame unquenchable.” Elder Bednar further explained that it was the fire of the covenant that burned in their hearts. It was their commitment to worship and honorably hold a name and standing in the house of the Lord. Let us all remember the covenants that we have made in the temple and have them burned in our hearts. Temple Worship Strengthens Families

For you who are parents, I would like to share some counsel Elder Boyd K. Packer gave couples who are about to be sealed which applies to us: “You now become a family, free to act in the creation of life, to have the opportunity through devotion and sacrifice to bring children into the world and to raise them and foster them safely through their mortal existence; to see them come one day, as you have come to participate in these sacred temple ordinances.”

Bro. Skinner adds: “As we follow this pattern, we are doing what our Heavenly Parents do. We create and nurture life, we provide our sons and daughters with opportunities for growth and progression, and we seek to have them arrive at the point where they desire to continue the pattern, wherein lies true happiness. Being sealed together as husband and wife and children is not just a nice thing to do, not just the customary pattern to follow. Being sealed together as an eternal family is the very order of heaven. It is the kind of life our Heavenly Parents live. In other words, the family isn’t just the basic unit of society; it is the basic unit of eternity.” (p.68)

I encourage parents, insofar as possible, to support and encourage your children, especially those between the ages of 12 and 18, to go to the temple at least once a month to do baptisms and confirmations for the dead. As the youth do this, they will develop a pattern in their lives of going to the temple often and they will also feel the power of the temple and the great love that our Savior has for each one of His children. This practice eventually will lead them to participate in the crowning ordinance of the temple: being sealed as families for time and all eternity.

Temple Worship: A Pattern in Our Lives

(Part 1 of 4)

 Following Prophetic Counsel

In a revelation to the Prophet Joseph Smith in 1831 the Lord said “....but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.” (D&C 1:38). Thus the words of our living Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson, in the April 2009 General Conference are the same as if the Lord were speaking directly to us. President Monson said: “Now my brothers and sisters, we have built temples throughout the world and will continue to do so. To you who are worthy and able to attend the temple, I would admonish you to go often. The temple is a place where we can find peace. There we receive a renewed dedication to the gospel and strengthened resolve to keep the commandments. What a privilege it is to be able to go the temple, where we may experience the sanctifying influence of the Spirit of the Lord. Great service is given when we perform vicarious ordinances for those who have gone beyond the veil. In many cases we do not know those for whom we perform the work. We expect no thanks, nor do we have the assurance that they will accept that which we offer. However, we serve, and in that process we attain that which comes of no other effort: we literally become saviors on Mount Zion. As our Savior gave His life as a vicarious sacrifice for us, so we, in some small measure, do the same when we perform proxy work in the temple for those who have no means of moving forward unless something is done for them by those of us here in President Monson’s declaration he gave new emphasis to his statement in the April 2008 General Conference wherein he said, “To you who are able to attend the temple, I would counsel you to go often. Doing so will strengthen marriages and families.”

The words “admonish” and “counsel” suggest a sense of urgency. The dictionary defines “admonish” as “to warn” and “counsel” is “to advise”. Taken together, these statements are urging us to go to the temple often insofar as we have the ability to do so.

How should we define “often”? Elder Richard G. Scott told us in the April 2009 General Conference that he attends once a week. He said: “Fourteen years ago I decided to attend the temple and complete an ordinance once a week. When I am traveling I make up the missed visits in order to achieve that objective. I have kept that resolve, and it has changed my life profoundly. I strive to participate in all the different ordinances available in the temple.” Elder Scott continued by sharing, “I encourage you to establish your own goal of how frequently you will avail yourself of the ordinances offered in our operating temples. What is there that is more important than attending and participating in the ordinances of the temple? What activity could have a greater impact and provide more joy and profound happiness for a couple than worshipping together in the temple?”

As a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, Elder Scott has many assignments around the world. As I reflected on his observation, I recommitted to participate in at least one ordinance each week.

Finding my Genealogy - Elder Goo

Finding my Genealogy - Elder Goo

Here is a summary of how the Lord has blessed me in finding some of my Genealogy.

As to finding some of family history records, it all started when I received my Patriarchal Blessing in which it stated that it was my responsibility to farrot out the records of my ancestors so that they can enjoy the blessings of the Gospel vicariously."  It also stated that you will be successful in finding their records while on a mission and while at home.  The blessing was very specific and also said that this duty is resting upon me.

A couple of years later in 1965 I received my mission call to the Southern Far East Mission with headquarters in Hong Kong.  I made some effort to find some relatives by asking people with the last name of "Goo" what village they were from in China since I knew my where my grandfather was from.  I also looked in the phone book and made a few calls.  After almost 2 years had passed and not having any success, I began having doubts about the blessing which I received.  I then decided to fast and pray about it and began to ask almost everyone that I met if they knew anyone with the family name of "Goo".

One morning after teaching English at an elementary school in Kam Tin, near Yuen Long, I asked the Principal if he knew anyone by the name of Goo and he told me that there was a farmer right behind the school and his name was Goo.  We went over right away and sure enough he was from the same village that my grandfather was from in Chung Saan.  He had 2 brothers still living in China and agreed to write to them to ask for any family records.  About 2 weeks later, he called me and said that he had received 2 letters from his brother.  These letters contained some of our family history which was our line going back about 18 generations to the year 1395 A.D.  We knew that this was our family because even my name was in the family record.  My grandmother who was living in Hawaii at the time of my birth in 1945 sent the information back to the village to be recorded.  Another interesting thing which this relative stated in his letter was that their father told them to bury the records because the Communist were destroying many of the family records.  They were told that these records were valuable and would be of great use in the future.

In 1981 my parents went back to the village and were able to obtain the complete family record and we were able to do all of their ordinance work for them.  In December of 2009 my sister, her husband, my wife and I were also blessed to go to the family village and to meet some relatives who were still there.  We were also able to obtain more records from my mother's village. (The Lee family and Chun family)

I certainly have a strong testimony of this great work done in the temples in these latter-days.  We can not be saved without our ancestors and we all need to continue to find the records of our ancestors and to do their work for them.

I testify that these things are true.  In the holy name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Elder Goo 古长老

We are very excited to welcome our new senior couple missionaries, Elder and Sister Goo. We feel immensely blessed to have the life and church service experiences of wonderful Senior Missionaries in this ward once more.

Elder Goo served his mission as a 19 year old Elder in Hong Kong. Following his honorable return and his marriage to Sister Goo, as a couple were called to serve as Mission President and wife over the Hong Kong Mission. At the close of their dedicated service, they retuned to their home in Hawaii. Soon after retirement, the Goo's took up another calling, again in Hong Kong, but as the newly called Temple President and Matron.  They have once again chosen to serve the Lord as full time missionaries in the New York, New York North Mission.

We have been very privileged to hear part of their testimonies and conversion stories this last Sunday. Sister Goo has also made it possible for all to hear her personal conversion story through a BYU women's conference talk she gave a few years ago.

Cavitys of life

This last week our English class was all about going to the dentist office. To help demonstrate what the words cavity and filling were, we used this poor tooth. As you can see he is very sad! We realized as we taught that this tooth is a lot like us! when we have sins; We hurt, we are sad, we feel a need to change. We can't do it on our own however we need a "dentist" to help us. Unlike a dentist, who can only fill the holes, Jesus Christ and his Atonement can make them completely disappear!

Think to yourself What can you do to start to get rid of your spiritual "cavities"? And what do you need to do to allow the atonement to make your sins "white as snow"?
