How are the returned missionaries?? -- Sister Beer, Sister Woo, Sister Chan, Sister Lee!

Caitlin,

Cheryl,

Anni,

Jenny,

The Chinatown Ward is the only Chinese speaking ward in the boundaries of New York New York North Mission, so the full time missionaries that are called to speak Chinese will spend most of their mission in this ward. Chinatown becomes their home. Even after they finish their mission, memories of Chinatown will always hold a place deep in their hearts.
In Provo, Utah, some of the returned sister missionaries who are studying in BYU gathered together again. They became roommates once again after they developed a strong relationship between each other on their mission. So, what do their post-mission lives look like? As an editor of the blog, I invited them to write something to tell us about their recent lives as normal members of church, how do they develop their faith in the gospel, and how do they increase their spirituality?
Alright, I think I have been talking too much, let's see what the sisters said:

Sister Caitlin Beer:

Hello Chinatown Ward! I am so happy to be writing you. My life has changed a lot since I returned home.  I have gone back to school, started working as a teaching assistant at my university, and have met an awesome man who I will marry in December.  Throughout all of this, I have been incredibly grateful for the gospel of Jesus Christ and what it has done for me.  In December, my fiancé and I will go to the temple and being sealed for time and all eternity.  I am so grateful for the ordinances and covenants we make as followers of Christ.  I am so happy because I know that Heavenly Father loves me and will support me in keeping His commandments!  As I read scriptures, pray daily, attend church, and go to the temple I feel the Spirit’s presence in my life, and my Heavenly Father’s love for me.

I know that these are not exclusive blessings. Heavenly Father blesses all of His children as we keep His commandments!

Sister Cheryl Woo:

Hello my Chinatown friends! It’s been more than a year since I’ve been in Chinatown, but I still think about everyone often. I’m currently still going to school at BYU, so my days consist of mostly waking up, going to school, going home, going to bed, repeat. It may not seem like anything exciting, but I love it! Every day is a new opportunity for me to learn something and do something new. One of the things I’m working on in school is building a car, and building a small airplane that can fly by itself!:)

When life is busy, I have found that it is hard to stay focused on doing things that will truly make me better and happier because I get lost in the minutiae of daily life, working, cleaning, laundry, appointments, working some more 等等。

That is why I need the Lord in my life. When I converse with my Heavenly Father and think about what I need to say to him, He directs my thoughts back to the things which are most important to me. Home, family, friends, living the gospel. This has always been such a source of catharsis for me, and it is the most wonderful way to begin and end my day. So, don’t forget to pray!

“Look unto God with firmness of mind, and pray unto him with exceeding faith, and he will console you in your afflictions, and he will plead your cause..” Jacob 3:1

Sister Anni Chen:

After coming back from New York 6 month ago,  my life has been back to normal, but fulfilling.

During the 2 months I was in HongKong, I happily got together with my family again. I remind myself everyday to treasure the time I have to be with my family. No matter what we do, whether it be eating, chatting, shopping or resting, being together is a blessing for me. Every week, the thing which I look forward to the most is to go to church, which is a familiar place for my family members and I to learn and worship. I also received a calling to be a primary teacher. It really takes a lot of patience and charity to teach two cute, active boys.

I have learned a lot in these past couple months at college. Don't forget that there is reason for everything that happens. If we are willing to devote ourselves to God, we will understand that Heavenly Father has prepared a way for all of us to face all of the different challenges in our lives. If we take different approaches to the challenges we have, we will get different results. It doesn't matter whether we are working in a restaurant, babysitting, looking for a job, or studying in school, all of us may have a colorful and fulfilling life as long as we try our best to do what God wants us to do. This kind of fulfilling and peace wouldn't come from ourselves, but from the Holy Ghost.

Every single one of us either has or had dreams of great things we want to achieve. It really feels great to strive and seek for the things we want. But, we need understand what our priorities are. The greatest commandment that God gives us is "love thy God". We need to make God our priority. We may not be able to fulfill this commandment all at once, but we can do it step by step. For example: Prayer, Scripture study, service, and going to the temple are some of my priorities in my life right now.

People are happiest when they have a sense of gratitude. I am grateful for everything I have.

Sister Jenny Lee:

The few months that I’ve been home have gone by really fast. I still miss Chinatown every single day. Right now I am studying Civil Engineering at BYU so I spend a lot of my time doing homework and studying. When I’m not doing school work, I go climbing or hang out with other Chinatown missionaries.

On my mission, I learned a lot of good habits. Even though I’ve returned from my mission, I need to continue these habits and continue strengthening my testimony and faith. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have enough time to do the things that will strengthen my faith. This last conference, I really liked what Richard G. Scott said, “Don’t yield to Satan’s lie that you don’t have time to study the scriptures. Choose to take time to study them. Feasting on the word of God each day is more important than sleep, school, work, television shows, video games, or social media. You may need to reorganize your priorities to provide time for the study of the word of God. If so, do it!”

Even when school gets very busy, I make it a priority to read my scriptures first thing in the morning, pray, and attend the temple weekly. I have learned that we will ALWAYS have time to do those simple things such as reading scriptures and praying daily, and attending the temples if we make the time. As I have done these things I have seen so many blessings. I am doing better at school and I find that I have the faith and strength to face everyday challenges. When I put the gospel first, Heavenly Father always makes sure I have enough time to do other things that I want to do. Most importantly, I am happier and I feel the love that our Heavenly Father has for me. I am so grateful for the examples of the Chinatown members and I miss you all every much!

Spirtual Message: "I will Hasten my work"

D&C 88:73, the Lord said to His servants:"Behold, I will hasten my work in its time."
The time is now. High-speed developing of information-technology, plus the global popularization of Internet, smart phones, and social media make the speed of information exchanged become many times quicker than newspaper, magazines, or even television. At the same time, Internet tools (like social medias) can also be a double-edged swords. We have to make better choices in how to use them in order to have those tools help us in the Lord's work. Earlier this year, Elder David A. Bednar gave us some great council about this, he said:"The Lord is hastening His work, and it is no coincidence that these powerful communication innovations and inventions are occurring in the dispensation of the fullness of times. Social media channels are global tools that can personally and positively impact large numbers of individuals and families. And I believe the time has come for us as disciples of Christ to use these inspired tools appropriately and more effectively to testify of God the Eternal Father, His plan of happiness for His children, and His Son, Jesus Christ, as the Savior of the world; to proclaim the reality of the Restoration of the gospel in the latter days; and to accomplish the Lord’s work."
The church produced a video talked about how we can #sharegoodness in our life. There are members in our ward in the video!!!

Brother Gao Jianbin

On Feb 6th, 2014, I came to the United States alone, and started my journey in this crazy land. On the 10th, one of my friends brought me to Elizabeth Street, and introduced me to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Originally, I thought church would be a very solemn, serious place, where people can only say extremely polite things. But when I got off from the elevator, I saw an elder, Elder Cook. He said to me, "How are you doing? Welcome to our church." Then he asked me some questions, and got to know me. Since that day happened to be Sunday, I accepted Elder Cook's invitation, went into the
chapel, and joined the Sunday service with other investigators and members. After the meetings, the elders asked for my number. Ever since then, the elders have called me at least once a week. Sometimes I can't come to church, but the elders will still teach me more of the gospel of Jesus Christ through the phone or over the internet to help me to progress in the gospel. For me, I feel so warm in my heart. In America, in Chinatown, the church has been a home to me.

On June 8th, with the bishop, elders, brothers, and sister witnessing, I got baptized. I became an official member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am honored to have become a part of this big family. After joining the church, I feel like my life has become progressively more colorful and meaningful.

In these last several months, I feel I have been progressing a lot, especially spiritually. One time at work, two of my coworkers went out to smoke after rush hour (smoking is not good, it's in a commandment called "The Word of Wisdom". We shouldn't smoke). They weren't paying attention and locked themselves out. And to add to that, neither of them had their phone. At the same time this was happening, I had to go to the bathroom. And for some reason, I felt like I needed to open the outside door. I didn't know my co-workers were out there and had locked themselves out. My coworkers were really happy and thanked me as we went back to work. I kept thinking about it after it happened. I have no idea about why I would've opened that door, especially at that moment. I don't think it was a simple coincidence. I believe it was a revelation that Heavenly Father gave me for my testimony to grow.

I want to share a scripture with everyone: "And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them." ( 1 Nephi 3:7 ) After studying the gospel for months, the missionaries asked me to help them teach the gospel to others. I feel so happy about it, because President Spencer W. Kimble taught us:  "We become more substantive as we serve others--indeed, it is easier to 'find' ourselves because there is so much more of us to find!" Something that's made me even happier is that I have this opportunity be a tool in Heavenly Father's hand, to do those things that He has prepared for us to do.

When I came from China and graduated from high school, I was an Atheist. I had never felt a feeling like this until I came to church in America. And now it's getting stronger and stronger, Heavenly Father has helped me fill something missing in my heart. I feel happier and happier, my life has become better and better.

So, I testify, God is our Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ is our savior. The Book of Mormon is true, our church -- the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the true church with the true priesthood authority. Our President Thomas S. Monson is the living prophet who is called by God.

I say all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen..

The Sacrament!!!

Have you ever wondered what is Sacrament or why do we partake of the sacrament? In The Church is Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, The sacrament, "provides an opportunity for you to remember with gratitude the life, ministry, and Atonement of the Son of God." Moreover, The Bible states that as Jesus was eating with his Disciples, "and as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave
it to the disciples, and said, take, eat; this is my body...For this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins." ( Matthew 26:26-28).
As Christ taught, we meet together as church members and families to partake of the sacrament. We know as we do this and if we strive to repent, the Lord will forgive us for our sins. As we partake of the bread, we remember Christ's body and His crucifixion. When we drink from our cup of water, we remember the blood that He shed for us in the Garden of Gethsemane. We hope that during Sacrament Meeting, everyone would have a spirit of reverence and a desire to grow closer to God. When we worthily partake of the sacrament, we renew the covenant or promise we made with God as we were baptized, to always remember His son Jesus Christ and to keep His commandments.  We invite everyone to prepare throughout the week for their Sunday worship. Also, we promise that as you do these things, you will be able to, "always have His spirit," with you!!!

The prayer of faith

About 10 years ago, I joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I was 15 years old at that time. Since I joined the church, the most powerful knowledge I have learned from the church is how to pray. Through prayers I can always feel the love from my Heavenly Father deeply. I believe if we can learn how to pray with faith we can receive more blessings and help from God, our Heavenly Father, in our lives. If that is the case how can we pray with faith? We need to understand these 3 points first:

1.      What does praying mean to us?

In the last first presidency message, President Henry B. Eyring said: “Prayer is more than words we speak to

God. It is a two-way communication between God and His children.” Elder Richard G. Scott also taught: Prayer is a supernal gift of our Father in Heaven to every soul…… because He knows how desperately we need His guidance.” From those priceless teachings, we can understand that prayer is a gift and a blessing that Heavenly Father gives us for our salvation. Because of this gift, we can receive guidance and peace in our lives.

2.      Can our prayers be answered?

The answer of this question is yes. Just like what President Eyring said, prayer is a kind of “two-way

communication”. Because it is a two-way communication Heavenly Father will listen and answer our prayers. There are many ways that He can answer our prayers. Answering prayers through the Holy Ghost is one of these way. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, counseled us in D&C Chapter 8: “I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.”

3.      What kind of attitude should we have while we are praying?

in the Book of Mormon a prophet, named Moroni, himself invited us to “ask with a sincere heart, with real intent”. What does it mean to have sincere heart and real intent? Elder Dallin H.Oaks Explained it very well. He said: “The promise of Moroni is for those who are committed in their hearts to act upon the manifestation if it is received.” We need make a decision in our heart that whatever the answer might be, we will use all we have to act upon the answer we received.

In conclusion, if we can understand those points better, then we will be able to pray with faith. Then we can better use the gift that Heavenly Father has given us. We can receive more blessings out of it!

For everyone to improve their prayers, we invite you to read those two articles by the leaders of the church:

1. Using the Supernal Gift of Prayer        Elder Richard G. Scott, Oct. 2007General Conference

2. ThePrayer of Faith          PresidentHenry B. Eyring, Oct. 2014 Liahona

Brothers and Sisters, how do YOU improve your prayers???

Brother Qiu Cheng Ming

I am glad to be called a member of the Chinatown Ward. This ward is a family that has brought happiness into my life. I first learned about Christianity from a copy of the Bible. After I read the Bible, I felt Jesus Christ was a great person, because He influences all of our lives with His gospel. Then, I came to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I learned about the gospel from the Elders, I came to love and respect our lord more. There is a sentence in the Bible said: “Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the Lord.” This scripture has helped me overcome many challenges in my life. Sister Liu Hui Yun

Sister Liu Hui Yun

I want to share a testimony. I remember there was a period of time when problems in my family and at work were very hard for me. I was trying to find a job that allowed me to have Sundays off, When my father suddenly had a stroke. I wasn't able to do anything to help except send money back to China. The sister missionaries taught me to fast and pray. I wondered to myself, "Does this actually work?" I was consistently praying already, but I felt like I hadn't gotten an answer yet. The sisters told me, "Sister Liu, you need to have faith in God, and keep praying! Heavenly Father has promised you that he will give you an answer. He has prepared a way for all of us. He will guide us in the right direction." So I fasted and prayed for my father. Two or three days after, my father's condition became better. I continued fasting and praying for a few months, hoping my father's health would completely recover. I'm grateful for the promises the Lord has made. After my father recovered, I started worrying about my job again. Before I started calling numbers in the newspaper, I said a prayer. I told Heavenly Father that if he would help me find a good boss and good co-workers on the first try, I will bear testimony of Him. On the first try, I found a good job. I want to share my story with everyone and bear witness of Jesus Christ. When we need help, don't forget to pray. Praying is the best way to communicate with Heavenly Father. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
