I wasn't familiar with anything when I barely got to America. It was a new environment with a totally different language. I was timid in the first place, so I didn't really dare to go anywhere alone. I was going out to eat with my friend one day when we came across some missionaries passing out flyers. We stopped and talked with them for a while. Right when I started to want to understand more, my friend said, "Let's go look for a place to eat!" I thought to myself that I would come back later, but I couldn't find them after we finished. I was pretty disappointed.
The next day I went past the same place and saw the missionaries again. I was super excited to see them. We talked and got to know each other. After we spoke for a while, they asked me for my phone number. They called me the next day to ask when I would have time to go to their church. We set up a time to meet. I didn't know how to get to the church, so we met at a place I was familiar with and then went together.
I finally got there. It looked small and simple. It was a lot different from what I thought it would be like, and from the other churches that I had been to before. I wondered whether or not this was even a church. While I had these questions, the missionaries enthusiastically introduced some things to me. They gave me a Book of Mormon and invited me to read it everyday. They also encouraged me to find out if it was true. I started to go to church on Sundays. The more I learned about it, the more I liked it.
It was actually quite a long time from coming across the church until I was baptized. I knew it was true. I believed that Heavenly Father lived, and that His son Jesus Christ sacrificed for us all. I think that the reason it took so long to get baptized is that I thought I only had to keep the commandments, obey God, and do good things. I didn't think that I needed to get baptized. The missionaries told me that baptism is an important part of the process. It is a beginning step to return to Heavenly Father, and a commitment that we make with Him. They also said that baptism will wash away our past mistakes and help us become a new person. I'm very grateful to the missionaries for patiently teaching me and helping me to grow and understand.
I got baptized on August 8, 2013. I'm thankful to Heavenly Father for bringing me back. I have felt more peace, happiness, and blessings since coming across the church. Thanks to the missionaries and the sisters for their help and care.
(I really like the church's books, like the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Daughters in My Kingdom, Word of Wisdom, The Church of Latter-Day Saints, and the Liahona. They help me to grow. I feel very thankful to be able to read them.)
I know that Heavenly Father loves me, and that He will be by my side no matter what happens. He knows me personally, and that brings me a lot of peace. I know that I have to diligently learn the gospel, choose the right, and do those things that God wants. I should also keep learning from Christ's example and become more like Him. By doing this, I can return to be with God one day.
So friends, if you haven't joined our church yet, then we welcome you to come and learn. If you do this, God will bless you. He will bless you more than you can imagine.
I bear testimony that our Heavenly Father and his beloved Son Jesus Christ live. The Book of Mormon is true. Our church is also true. We need to keep walking on this straight and narrow path by keeping the commandments, repenting, and obeying. I know that if we do this, Heavenly Father will bless us. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
