Thanksgiving

To give thanks is not something we should do only once a year. Thanks giving should be something we keep with us always. Therefore, we decided to do a post today about how we can keep gratitude and thanks giving with us always.

Thanksgiving
A season of gratitude

As Thanksgiving comes and goes around again we are reminded of all of the things we are grateful for in life. As we come together with friends and family and enjoy each others presence, we celebrate a years worth of blessings and opportunities had and we look forward to what will come next year. We remember and count all our many blessings and express gratitude for those things we are thankful for. But our gratitude need not be limited only to one season of the year, on the contrary we should be showing our gratitude all year round. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf recently counseled all of us on this spirit of thanksgiving saying, "Could I suggest that we see gratitude as a disposition, a way of life that stands independent of our current situation? In other words, I’m suggesting that instead of being thankful for things, we focus on being thankful in our circumstances—whatever they may be." May we discuss for a minute about how we can develop an ability to be grateful in our circumstances.
Recognition. We must start from the very beginning. How did we even get to have this life on earth in the first place? Our loving heavenly Father sent us here so that we can learn and grow. 1 Nephi 17:36 teaches us that "the Lord hath created the earth that it should be inhabited; and he hath created his children that they should possess it." We must recognize that everything we have comes because God, our loving father in heaven, has allowed us to have this opportunity. When we recognize God's hand in our lives we cannot help but be humbled by his infinite love for us.
Humility. The key part of keeping any commandment is being willing to succumb to God's will. Faithfully and humbly acknowledging that God's will is higher than ours. God has commanded us that "Thou shalt thank the Lord thy God in all things." (See D&C 59:7). So we must soften our hearts and acknowledge Him, because "in nothing doth man offend God, or against none is his wrath kindled, save those who confess not his hand in all things, and obey not his commandments." (See D&C 59:21). As we trust God and humble ourselves, open up our hearts and do His will, we move forward on the road to being grateful in any circumstance. "True gratitude is an expression of hope and testimony. It comes from acknowledging that we do not always understand the trials of life but trusting that one day we will." (President Uchtdorf, Grateful in any Circumstances)
Faith and determination. Finally, we must press forward with faith. As we strive to develop the ability to be grateful in any circumstances we will not have immediate success. Much like developing all Christlike attributes we won't instantly change, it is a process. The way to attain your goal is by continual reflection and remembrance of where you want to be, continual prayer and continually listening to the Holy Ghost's guidance.
As we do these things we will be able to develop a true attitude of gratitude, or an ability to be grateful in any circumstances. President Uchtdorf said "Gratitude to our Father in Heaven broadens our perception and clears our vision. It inspires humility and fosters empathy toward our fellowmen and all of God’s creation. Gratitude is a catalyst to all Christlike attributes! A thankful heart is the parent of all virtues." Gratitude is just the beginning of our journey to becoming like Christ. As you walk in faith, recognizing God's hand in your life you will slowly but surely be able to be grateful in any circumstances, regardless of what they may be.

Ward Member Sharing Time -- Part 2

On Wednesday, we posted a article about some of ward members favorite scriptures and the reason why. It has been a great success. Just like the movies, if the first one is successful, the movie producers would work on the second one as soon as they can. We now have a Part 2 as well! We invite everyone to read it and share it with others! Unlike those movies, we promise that part 2 will be as great as the part 1, if not better!!!

Brother Cao Peng

"And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost. And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." (Moroni 10:4-5)

Ever since I first came to the church, I have felt that it is a very pleasant place; the people here are just like my own brothers and sisters. This kind of feeling always gives me a strong desire to come to church. When the sister missionaries asked me if I want to be baptized, I felt like I was't quite ready because I still had doubts. But without a doubt, I could feel an inner peace every time I came to church. I remember the missionaries said that all good feelings come from the influence of the Holy Ghost, and that I should pray with sincere heart and real intent and ask God. I got an answer that Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost are real. It also let me know that if we pray with a sincere heart and real intent and have faith in the gospel, we will be able to overcome the trials and challenges we face in life. Heavenly Father is the rock that makes our foundation steady. He is our guiding light to lead us through the darkness. As long as we pray and communicate with Him daily, the blessings will follow. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen!

2 Nephi Chapter 4 is one of my favor scriptures. After Lehi died, Nephi’s biggest life mentor, his biggest life cheerleader, his biggest supporter, was gone. This was the lowest moment in Nephi’s life. Then he cheered himself up by reminding himself about how many great things he had seen, and how wonderful and blessed his life was. I love that he can focus on the positive side of things even in his most sorrowful moment. His faith is rock solid because he truly believes that God is his rock. He found peace by calling upon Him forever.

In my low points, I love to read this chapter to remind myself that God is my rock and is on my side. The hard and difficult tasks of life become relatively easy to be completed when I know that I just need to do my part and God will take care of the rest I bear my testimony that God loves every one of us. And that is why He lets us have difficult tasks in life: for us to grow. Some of the challenges might be really hard when we are facing them, but those moments are essential to strengthen our faith.

Alma 5: 34 Yea, he said: Come unto me and ye shall partake of the fruit of the tree of life; yea, ye shall eat and drink of the bread and the waters of life freely;"I was reading the Book of Mormon with my Student Manual for my class the next day. I suddenly had a strong feeling when I read this verse in Alma 5. I thought about how far I have come with my humble prayers and of miracles coming from Christ’s mercy. In addition, I have come to know that Jesus Christ has never denied any of Heavenly Father’s children. Christ welcomes all of His children from India, Russia, South America, China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and the rest of the world to learn His gospel. Christ's Atonement is infinite. He lessened my burden and comforted me and understood my circumstances when I felt discouraged about talking to other people about my problem. I cannot deny the fact that Christ is our brother, Redeemer, and Savior. We do not need to exchange anything to be His friend. He welcomes us to partake of “the bread and waters freely” and live righteously like Him. How ugly, stupid, or dumb we are does not matter to Him at all. He welcomes us to join His relay of spreading the gospel. He is the head and leader of this relay. The baton represents how the gospel is spreading continuously throughout the world and passing on from one member to another. This relay will not cease as Christ lives. The ultimate reward of joining His work is joy which is an indescribable gift that He has for all of us.

"And it came to pass that after I had prayed and labored with all diligence, the Lord said unto me: I will grant unto thee according to thy desires, because of thy faith." (Enos 1:12)

It's like the time I lost my metro card - I prayed really hard and I saw a picture of where I could find it in my head. Heavenly Father helped me find my metro card.

"Nevertheless, the Nephites were inspired by a better cause, for they were not fighting for monarchy nor power but they were fighting for their homes and their liberties, their wives and their children, and their all, yea, for their rites of worship and their church." (Alma 43:45)

I like this one because it tells us that they are fighting for good. They want to protect their families.

"21 And now as I said concerning faith--faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are true." (Alma 32:21)

I like this one because it talks about how believing in things comes from your heart. You cannot see, smell or touch it, but you just know and feel it inside!

Ward Member Sharing Time -- Part 1

In the spiritual thought last week, we talked about studying the scriptures. This week, we invited some of the members in our ward to write down their favourite scripture in the Book of Mormon, and the reason why they like it. We invite everyone to read, and through reading those examples we can have a better understanding about the scriptures! If you want to share any scriptures with us, or you have any comments, feel free to share with us by writing them down in the "comment" session!!

"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them." (1 Nephi 3:7)

Just like what the scripture says, I will go and do the things which the Lord has commanded me: keep His commandments, have faith in Heavenly Father, continually pray and read the scriptures. Even though there will be trials and setbacks, I believe Heavenly Father has prepared a way for me. As long as the things that I ask of Heavenly Father are right and realistic, I believe He will bless me so that I am able to accomplish them.

Brother Gao, Jian Bin

"And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness. I give unto men weakness that they may be humble; and my grace is sufficient for all men that humble themselves before me; for if they humble themselves before me, and have faith in me, then will I make weak things become strong unto them." (Ether 12:27)

This verse of scripture has helped me a lot, especially when I have had to deal with relationships with others. As we know, the foundation of our relationships with others is mutual respect. When we are able to respect others, it is because we are able to get rid of our attitude.

It is because we are humble. It is because we are willing to listen to what others have to say and to what Heavenly Father has to say. Being humble can help us to learn more and become more perfect. It will keep us from being conceited and self-obsessed. Our Heavenly Father loves us so much. He wants each one of us to be humble and recognize our weakness. From that, we can work on overcoming our weaknesses, turning them into our greatest strengths. Thanks be to our Father in Heaven.

A few years ago, I made a bad decision. Although many parents had done this, I always knew it was not honest conduct: I used someone else's address so my child could attend a so-called "better" public zone school in our district. I soon found out that in order to cover the false information I had given, the need to make up more lies increased, and this one lie rolled like a snowball, getting bigger and bigger, until my child, very confused and perplexed, suddenly asked me a question. It was then that I recognized the cost and consequences of being dishonest. Not being able to teach my child the meaning of the word "honesty" by my own example made me extremely scared, but I was still lacking the courage to change immediately. Over and over again, my mind was disturbed by and tangled in the memory of my own wrongdoings. Those were the most restless, guilt-ridden three days of my life. On the afternoon of the third day when we all sat down for family scripture reading, I read chapter nine of 2 Nephi in the Book of Mormon. The Lord's voice struck against the wall of my conscience like thunder, even my very own child could feel my trembling ---

"O, my beloved brethren, turn away from your sins; shake off the chains of him that would bind you fast; come unto that God who is the rock of your salvation. But behold, my brethren, is it expedient that I should awake you to an awful reality of these things? Would I harrow up your souls if your minds were pure? Would I be plain unto you according to the plainness of the truth if ye were freed from sin? Behold, if ye were holy I would speak unto you of holiness; but as ye are not holy, and ye look upon me as a teacher, it must needs be expedient that I teach you the consequences of sin." ( 2 Nephi 9:45, 47-48)

I immediately apologized to my child for my wrongdoings. I also called the school at once to apologize and then took my child to where she was supposed to go, finding out that she was already assigned a great teacher there. Repenting gave me a feeling of peace and allowed me to experience a freedom which I had never felt before. I felt renewed. My mistakes once had made me feel so guilty, but the Lord's teachings were straightforward and encouraging. I am grateful I have been given free agency to choose so that I can constantly learn from my mistakes and repent. Relying upon the words of God and choosing righteousness and honesty are more important than anything else in the world.

Little Sister Kelly Li

July 9th, 2014, I arrived in America and started my life in this new and strange place. In my mind, as a 13 year old in America, speaking fluent English was a must, so my parents were busy finding an English class for me to learn spoken English.
One day in July, my parents and I were walking down the street and looking for an English class. Suddenly we saw two missionaries with a whiteboard. It said, "Free English Class." One of the missionaries was Chinese (Elder Wang Shuai), and one was an American (Elder Radford). We asked them about it and got an address for the church. The following Saturday, we went there. When I got there, I saw the chapel.
Was this really a church? I was so surprised and confused.

In the church, all of the missionaries could speak Chinese and English well! They helped me and taught me a lot. Later, I went to school and kept going to the church on Saturday to learn the gospel with the sisters. I also got to know a lot of friends at church, like Tammy and Zoe... I always have a great time at church.
On November 9th, 2014, I was baptized. I became a new member of the church, and a new member of this big family. I know this church is true and I know the Book of Mormon is true.
I know now, as a new member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, that I have to keep praying, keep reading scriptures, help others, and do better...
I am a daughter of our Heavenly Father. I love him and He loves us. I say all these things in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Spiritual Message: Feasting upon the words of Christ

In the Book of Mormon, the prophet Nephi teaches us: "Wherefore, I said unto you, feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do."

It's pretty easy to tell that this scripture is inviting us to come and learn more about Christ's words. Christ's words includes all of the holy text contained in the scriptures. So, what did the prophet Nephi mean when he said 'feast'? How do we feast on the scriptures? What is the difference, then, between 'feasting on the scriptures' and 'reading the scriptures' ? We would like to share with you the thoughts and inspiration we received while we were studying this question.

1. Pray before reading the scriptures. We can invite the Holy Ghost through prayer, through that Holy Spirit, God will help us understand what the scriptures mean and will reveal the truthfulness of what they teach us. Moroni, in the end of the Book of Mormon, promises us that "by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things." So, if we want to feast on the words of Christ, we must not forget to pray.

2. Ponder how to apply what we have learned to our everyday lives. The same prophet, Nephi, also taught us that when we read, we must "liken all scriptures unto us". So, while you are pondering, act as if these words of Christ are being spoken directly to you. Just like how the only way we get nutrients from food is if we eat and allow our body to digest the food, we must "liken" these scriptures to ourselves in order to fully feast upon the words of Christ.

3. Develop a habit of taking notes. Our study notes do not need to be anything extravagant or extra colorful to be effective. Instead we should simply write what we feel. We have provided an excerpt from the study notes of Sister Li Hong in our ward, please take a moment to read through her example of note-taking.
"This week I read 1 Nephi chapters 16-22, my favorite verse was in 16:28 "And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the a
faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them." This is the same way the Holy Ghost works, when we have faith in the Lord, keep the commandments he has given us, read the scriptures every day and pray with faith then the Holy Ghost can be with us. If we give heed, then we will hear the still small voice of the Spirit, this voice will tell us how to make correct choices, thus guaranteeing that we are walking on the strait and narrow path that the Lord has prepared for us. If we do not have faith in the Lord and do not keep his commandments then the Holy Ghost will leave us, just like how the Liahona stopped working for Nephi's family. Therefore, need to preserve a good environment in our hearts to let the Holy Ghost stay with us. I really like this scripture, it teaches us that the Lord will bring great things to pass through small and simple means."
Taking notes like this not only will help us more deeply understand the scriptures, but will also help us more fully feast upon the words of Christ.

4. Finally, keep a grateful heart. This type of gratitude comes from understanding the importance of the scriptures, but it is not easily attained. When King Benjamin taught his sons he said "I say unto you, my sons, were it not for these things, which have been kept and preserved by the hand of God, that we might read and understand of his mysteries, and have his commandments always before our eyes, that even our fathers would have dwindled in unbelief, and we should have been like unto our brethren, the Lamanites, who know nothing concerning these things, or even do not believe them when they are taught them, because of the traditions of their fathers, which are not correct." only through the help of the scriptures and personal revelation can we understand the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So we must thank our Heavenly father for this gift he has given us by treasuring this valuable asset that we have which allows us to feast upon the words of Christ

The four above mentioned points are what our missionaries would like to share about 'feasting upon the words of Christ'. We invite you all to study the scriptures every day, feast upon the words of Christ, we promise that if you do this, you will be able to obtain what God has promised us all through the mouth of his servant Nephi that "the words of Christ (scriptures) will tell you all things what ye should do."
